This photo of Ruth Rudd in 2002, who was 11 years old at the time, is an example of why The Good Word Ministry was formed in May 2007. A pastor from New York who knew no sign language could proclaim the written Word of God to Deaf children in Jamaica through the signed words of another child. The founders of GWM wanted to create a vehicle through which people could become easily involved in spreading God's Word as the Holy Spirit creates opportunities. The preeminent goal is to spread the good news about Jesus Christ, as revealed in the Bible. One avenue for doing this is the purchase of Bibles and discipleship literature, and distributing it to those without the resources or access to obtain it. Another avenue is language training to assist people in understanding the Word of God.

Another primary goal is to provide administrative oversight and financial accountability to their missionaries, without imposing organizational impediments to effective ministry of the Word. They want the missionaries to be free to follow the Holy Spirit's leading, as they encounter situations and opportunities in the field for fruitful ministry of the Word. The overriding commitment of all involved is to follow the Word of God as closely as possible, for the honor and glory of God.

The commitment of the Board is of Directors is to keep the missionaries accountable in the areas of finances and spiritual health, while maintaining a Spirit led environment of ministry. They wish to maintain a focus on fulfilling the Great Commission, i.e. making disciples through teaching people what God has said through his Word, while at the same time exhibiting compassion and assistance to those in need of "a cup of cold water".
